A: What time does the meeting start?
A: 會議幾點開始?
B: Two o'clock on the nose.
B: 二點整。
◆"on the nose" 除了當時間整點外, 還有「完全」(exactly) 的意思。好比你的心事被一個朋友看透了。你就可以對他說:"Your guess was right on the nose." (你的猜測完全正確。)

◆想像這樣的情形: 一群人在等遲遲還不出現的李四, 正當大家正在煩惱到底要不要再等下去時, 忽然有一個人問你「我們該繼續等還是走了呢?」。這時眾人的眼光聚集在你的身上, 一定讓你讓你覺得壓力很大。這種類似被揪出來成為焦點的感覺, 就是這裡的"be put on the spot"。

| on the verge of 差一點; 處在(某事的)邊緣; 瀕臨 |
Just as she was on the verge of giving up on her dreams, she received a full scholarship to study at the San Francisco Ballet School.
就在她正準備放棄她的夢想時, 她收到了到 San Francisco Ballet School 讀書的全額獎學金。
◆verge 是邊緣的意思。"on the verge of" 就相當於 "close to", 有「差一點就...」的意思。
◆on the verge of 後除了接 V-ing 的形式外, 還可加名詞。
【例】As I listened to her story with her late husband, I found myself on the verge of tears.
在聽她敘說她和她亡夫的故事時, 我發現自己幾乎落淚。

A: Gee... for a vegetarian, you sure like beef.
A: 哎呀! 對一個吃素的人來說, 你的確是蠻喜歡吃牛肉的嘛!
B: Sigh.. My meatless diet was so horrible that I had trouble sleeping at night. I've been thinking about steak for a month and now I've finally got it out of my system.
B: (嘆氣) 我的無肉減肥餐實在太可怕了, 讓我晚上都睡不著! 我想牛排想了一個月了, 現在總算讓我好好發洩了一下!
◆說到 system 這個字時, 我們一般會想到像「電腦」、「機器」這類結構複雜的東西。
在英文裡, system 也可指身體機能的構造( 如 digestive system 消化系統)。所以在口語裡, 美國人便常用像 "get something out of one's system" 來表示把一種念頭(或情緒)從心裡趕走或發洩出來的意思。
【例】Just let him talk, so he'll get it out of his system. 就讓他說吧, 這樣他才能發洩一下!
◆例句中的 sure 原本為形容詞, 但在口語中可以詞當副詞 surely 用。注意在正式文章裡應避免。

◆將(某人)放在有壓力的情況下:
【例】The question put him on the spot. 那個問題令他難以答覆。
◆當場:
【例】Peter arrived in 10 minutes and fixed my car right there on the spot. Peter 十分鐘後到達並當場就在那裡把我的車修好了。
◆即時:
